Allen Lowery -
Hello
fellow racers! My name is Allen Lowery and I would like to begin
with a little background about myself. I am 34 years old and married
to an awesome wife, Stephanie. I have two great kids (a son, Dakota
who is 8 and a daughter, Carsen who is 5). My dad, Fred is the
only crewmember I have and it’s great to have him involved
in racing. We make up Lowery Motorsports. We have three racecars
with a 4th coming this summer. I drive a 1927 Ford Roadster that
runs Super Gas, Super Rod, and bracket races. I also drive a Mullis
4-link Dragster that runs Super Comp, Quick Rod, and bracket races.
Dakota drives a Spitzer Jr. Dragster. The 4th car is a Plymouth
Prowler, which is currently being built by Foy Gilmore. It will
run Top Dragster. We have a 23’ Haulmark Toterhome and a
44’ stacker to haul everything around and make life at the
track quite nice.
I
have been racing for six years now with some success and some
weekends of wondering why I do this. We travel throughout the
Southeast, some parts of the East Coast and Texas. Before drag
racing, I played Men’s Major Softball (this is not your
average slow-pitch softball). It was probably more competitive
than anything else I’d ever done in my life (besides marriage).
From 1991 to 1998, I was able to win nine National Championships
in three different sanctions. So, competing is something I’m
used to.
So, to get to the point, I will be writing a weekly column for
Drag Coverage to give you details of our adventures and misadventures
this summer. I hope you enjoy it! I am going to start with this
past weekend, May 7th. We went to Emerald Coast to run Jr. Dragsters,
Super Pro, and Nostalgia 5.70. It started with the junior breaking
the clutch during a time run. Dakota was disappointed and had
to sit out watching the other juniors run.
Lyle Smith offered his help by going home and getting a new clutch
system. He and my dad thrashed like a top fuel team to get the
junior ready for 1st round. They got it running just as they called
for them. With no time to get it right, Dakota got beat. However,
without the help of Lyle Smith, Robbie McLaney, Casey Smith, and
Eugene Caraway, Dakota wouldn’t have even made it for 1st
round. Thanks guys!
Super Pro was not very profitable, but I did learn more about
my new dragster. However, Jerry McAtee and his red Camaro thought
I hadn’t learned enough. There were several different classes
in the Nostalgia race. I was in the 5.70 Electronics class, which
means I have to do some good finish line driving since my ’27
Roadster runs 5.55. I went on to win the 5.70 bracket against
Chad and his silver Chevy II. Then I had to race Donald Dady in
the Outlaw Dodge Truck. He was the winner in the 6.00 bracket.
I was fortunate enough to win that round because Donald is always
tough. I got to the finals against Brett Gibbons and his yellow
Ford Fairlane. Brett and I are friends, so we had to do some jawing
before the race. He said he had been dead on his 8.00 index the
last four rounds, so I told him my worst light of the night was
.006 (not true). During the run, Brett had some shifter problems
and I cruised on for the victory.

Not a bad night, but it could have been better. Well, that’s
all for now. Our next race is an IHRA Division 2 race at US 43
Dragway in Etheridge, TN on May 20-22. See ya Soon!
I would like to thank Escambia Roof Masters, Inc., Roger McCombs
RV Supercenter, RPM High Performance, Roofers Mart Pensacola,
Flex Membrane Roofing Systems, Specialty Metalworks, Inc., and
Huntsville Engine and Performance Center. With their help, we
are able to have a winning team.
