Johnson edges coughlin in PS Showdown final
Feb.03
Following an off-season full of moves to enhance his Mopar/J&J Racing team, Allen Johnson opened the year with a win at the annual Las Vegas Pro Stock Showdown at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Johnson bolstered his program with the additions of Johnny Gray as a racing teammate and Jeff Perley as a tuner to his already talented cast. He ran a 6.70 in the final round to defeat reigning NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock world champ Jeg Coughlin.
"Maybe we need to do this at all the special races," said Johnson, who also won last year's NHRA K&N Horsepower Challenge. "I think we have a really good team of folks. If I do my job, I think we can win some races and get in position to win the championship."
Cool temperatures and good track conditions paved the way for performances such as Coughlin's low e.t. of 6.683 seconds, which is two-hundredths quicker than the official track record and two-thousandths quicker than his class-leading e.t. at last year's event. Consistent, fast performances from Coughlin and Johnson throughout the test session proved that they had two of the best cars on the premises.
Coughlin's Jegs.com Chevy Cobalt was strong on race day. Coughlin, who won this event last year, was the only driver to reach the 6.6-second range, which he did twice with a pair of 6.68s. The four-time world champ was happy with the results of his new Todd Bevis-built chassis.
"We had a really good weekend," said Coughlin. "We've made 12 runs with this car, and 11 of them were good enough to learn from. The track came around in the final, and we just weren't ready for it. It's nice to get back here at the racetrack with the smell and the fumes to get your competitive juices flowing."
Coughlin, the No. 1 qualifier, beat Bob Yonke in the first round and singled in round two before engaging in the race of the event with Tom Hammonds. Hammonds was second off the line with an .026 light, and Coughlin barely held on for a holeshot win, 6.72 to 6.71. Racers were impressed with the progress of Hammonds' Race For Achievement team.
"Coming out with a new car and the progression of our engine program have really turned this around," said Hammonds, a retired NBA player. "I think we can be very competitive this season. This weekend has given us a shot in the arm."

Ultimate 64 Car Shootout back with $200,000
Feb.03
Cincinnati, OH: As it enters it’s 4th annual event, the Ultimate 64 Shootout has earned a reputation as one of the finest and richest bracket racing events in the United States. The 4th annual Ultimate 64 Shootout will feature a new venue, as the event will be contested at Edgewater Sports Park, May 29-31. While the location has changed, the event’s basic structure remains unaltered, and the purses for the daily bracket events have been increased, making this the richest Ultimate 64 Shootout to date, with a guaranteed purse topping $200,000.
The $50,000-to-win main event features the same structure as the event’s first three seasons, with a 64-car pre-entered field that is already sold out (previous contestants have the first option to retain their entry in the field each season). As such, former $50,000 champions Steve Royalty, Rob Kropfeld, and John Cook, Jr. will be back to try to score repeat titles. Th e event also features a 64-car ultimate No Box shootout, which does still have entries available. This event is similar in structure to the main event, featuring 64 No Box competitors with a $500 entry fee. The winner of the shootout will take home $10,000, with the runner-up earning $4,000, and payback to the 1/8th finalists.
In addition to the shootout events, the Ultimate 64 Shootout will host the richest daily events in it’s history. These events are open to all competitors (no pre-entry necessary). The Box Class will be contested Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with a daily winners purse of $10,000. Runner-Ups will receive $2,000 and the race pays all the way back to 1/32 finalists (assuming the event goes 9 rounds, 1/16 finalists if less). Entry fee is just $100 each day, with 1st round buy backs only on Friday & Saturday (1st or 2nd on Sunday) at $75, and no buy backs with over 275 entries.
The daily No Box events are also richer than any previous Ultimate 64 Shootouts, boasting a $2,500 winners purse each day. These events pay back to the 1/8 finalists, and weekend entry is just $150. Like the Box class, No Box will have 1st round only buy backs Friday and Saturday (1st or 2nd on Sunday) for $30.
The event will also host a pair of 32-car shootouts for Box racers ($250 entry, $5,000-to-win), and a 32-car Door car only shootout that follows the same format.
I n addition to the hundreds of thousands of dollars available in the myriad of events on the race track, the Ultimate 64 Shootout will continue it’s tradition of fun events away from the racing surface. Racers will once again be invited to attend the annual golf tournament that kicks the weekend off Thursday afternoon, and the Ultimate 64 Texas Hold ‘Em tournament Thursday night. Instant Karma Racing will sponsor the Saturday night racers party, featuring live entertainment from 32 Below.
The traditional ultimate Frisbee toss will once again take place at the Ultimate 64 Shootout, guaranteeing one lucky fun $500 when their driver wins the Ultimate 64 Shootout Main Event.

Speedtech Nitrous to Debut onsite Sales
Feb.03
Continuing their trend of innovation and forward-thinking, SPEEDTECH Innovative Nitrous Systems recently made public their plan to provide on-site sales and service for their customers at a host of professional drag racing events in 2009, starting with the upcoming National Guard American Drag Racing League Dragpalooza V event at Houston Raceway Park near Baytown, Texas on March 5th and 6th.
After six months of planning, building and preparation, the much-talked about SPEEDTECH Service Center is nearing completion. The final step in the process will be to apply a vinyl wrap to the Chevrolet Van and 24-foot enclosed trailer, which will be applied at the SPEEDTECH facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama by the renowned vinyl experts at Fine Line Graphics. A presence on the ADRL manufacturer’s midway has become much sought after in the last year, and SPEEDTECH Nitrous will join a host of other quality manufacturers and service providers in their newest endeavor.

Davis says the interior layout of the trailer calls mostly for storage space for inventory, including burst panels, nitrous bottles, various other replacement parts and even complete systems for racers or enthusiasts looking to take their performance to the next level.
Dave Hance..World's Fastest Street Car?
Feb.03
Dave Hance, founder of Shakedown at E’town, shattered both ends of the quarter mile Drag Radial World Record this past weekend at Bradenton Motorsports Park, Bradenton, Florida while competing at the U.S. Street Nationals. On two separate passes Dave ran the record setting performances, a 6.93 e.t. and a 223.07 mph blast, in his 1993 Stock Suspension Ford Mustang on DOT radial tires without wheelie bars.

After a mishap at the Shakedown at E’town, the car was repaired in three weeks. Then the intense testing began. In a few short months, he completely turned it all around. During testing at the U.S. Street Nationals, Dave ran 7.10 @ 221.16; 7.05 @ 223.07; 7.04 @ 219.60; and 6.93 @ 207.66 (hurt engine). On the record 223 pass, he pedaled the car several times during the run as it got into a little tire shake about 40 feet out and made a move to the left. He was driving the car all the way down the track trying to keep it in the groove. The 1/8 mile was 4.70 @ 160.
